Operation Christmas Child, Nov. 15 - 22, 2010

Last month I learned of Operation Christmas Child from Natalie at Mommy on Fire and knew I wanted our family to participate. Operation Christmas Child is organized by Samaritan's Purse and their mission is "to demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around the world and together with the local church worldwide to share the good news of Jesus Christ." Natalie's post was wonderful ...take a peek. Last year Samaritan's Purse distributed 8 million of these boxes to needy children around the world. In a nutshell, we will fill a shoebox with goodies, take them to a local drop off center next week and the boxes will be distributed to children. You can read in more detail here and locate a drop off center here. The process could not be any more simple...pack a shoe box (some ideas are listed on the website as well), enclose $7.00 for help to defer costs, drop the box off and then track it to its' final destination.
We pray that by filling a small box with items we sometimes take for granted, we will be able to share the true meaning of Christmas with a child who otherwise would would be unaware.

We've done this every year for the last 11 years (since before the kids were born) and it's become a very special holiday tradition. My kids LOVE going shopping and finding neat little treasures to pack in their shoe box. We pray over our boxes before we take them to the drop off sight.

Such a great program. We've done this in my family the last several years. Each family buys something for the shoe boxes (candy, toys, some practical type items) and then we just fill a bunch of shoeboxes to send off.

Isn't this an amazing program?? I've also heard of those that received a shoebox as a child and are now able to fill a shoebox for others.

Hope this is a blessed activity for your family.
